How to Respond to a Google Review With No Text

Plenty of Google reviews are just a star rating with no words. There's nothing specific to respond to, which makes them oddly hard to answer. The good news: these replies can be very short.

Should you reply at all?

You don't have to, but it's worth it, especially for low ratings. A reply to a 1-star or 2-star rating with no text shows readers you take every bit of feedback seriously, and it gives the customer a way to tell you what went wrong. For 5-star ratings, a quick thank-you is a nice touch when you have time.

Keep it short and honest

Since there are no details, don't invent any. Don't guess what they liked or disliked. A one or two sentence reply is right. For high ratings, say thanks. For low ratings, say you're sorry it wasn't great and invite them to share more privately.

Use their name if it's shown

If the reviewer's display name is a first name, using it makes the reply feel personal. If it's a username or initials, skip the name rather than guessing.

Check your records

If you can match the rating to a recent visit or job, that context helps you decide whether to follow up privately through your normal channels. Don't reveal that context in your public reply, though. A public reply that says "we see you came in Tuesday for a root canal" shares private details the customer never posted.

Vary the wording

Star-only reviews come in bunches, and it's easy to paste the same reply into all of them. Keep three or four versions and rotate. Our response templates have more options, and the free reply generator works with star-only reviews too.

When the same person leaves several ratings

Occasionally a customer rates more than one of your locations, or rates you again after a later visit. Reply to each one on its own terms. If a regular's rating drops from five stars to two, that's worth a short, sincere note: "Thanks for being a regular, [name]. It sounds like your last visit wasn't up to our usual standard, and we'd love to hear what happened." Regulars who feel noticed tend to tell you what went wrong.

Ready-made lines to rotate

Here are a few short replies you can adapt. Swap the name, adjust the wording to fit your voice, and rotate them so they don't all look the same:

  • "Thank you for the great rating, [name]! It means a lot to our team."
  • "Thanks for stopping by and taking a moment to rate us, [name]!"
  • "We appreciate the stars, [name]. Hope to see you again soon!"
  • "Sorry we didn't earn a better rating this time. We'd love your feedback at [contact]."
  • "Thanks for rating us. If there's anything we could do better, we're all ears at [contact]."

Don't overthink it

Star-only reviews are the easiest to fall behind on, because each one feels unimportant. Batch them: once a week, reply to all of them in one sitting. A minute or two each is enough, and your profile will look consistently cared for.

A note on middle ratings

Three-star ratings with no text are the most ambiguous. The customer wasn't unhappy enough to complain, but something held them back. Treat it like a soft invitation: thank them, and say you'd love to hear what would have made it a five. Some people will tell you, and that feedback is often the most useful you'll get.

FAQ

Is it worth replying to a star rating with no comment?

Yes for low ratings, and nice-to-have for high ones. It's quick and shows you pay attention to all feedback.

Can I ask a star-only reviewer to add details?

You can invite them to share more with you privately. Avoid pressuring them to edit the public review.
